« Street work service

This project intends indentify kids at the 1st time on the street.
Our Street-educator spends time in down-town Moshi and Arusha, local cities in Tanzania, at the places where ,run way, homeless children  and abandoned congregate regardless of religious faith or ethnic group and educate them the effects of street environment in the  entire future, child’s obligations and how do parents/relatives feels. Children were given options, there's somewhere they can go temporary where they'll be safe, no one will hurt them, they'll have food, a bed, the chance to go to school and have possibility to address family problem together etc.

The Msamaria street educators who were the former street child and with Social Work skills do an initial assessment that involves a visit to the place were living before they fled to the streets.

However, there those children in between 14 – 24 chose street life as part and parcel of their life, you couldn’t manage to get them out of street in all means, but still they deserve as human being physical and moral support, psychosocial-support and get to empowered spirally ,mentally, emotionally and economically.

« Home visits, follow ups and re-unification

Understanding the reasons why children find be on the street differ, children behavior are not similar even children were twins, children came from different back ground and how had been on the street  this means their children’s problem are complex  with uniformity solution.
This project is done by qualified trained social worker to do a second home visit(s) and set the counseling schedule depending on the nature of problem and who also meet children's relatives and see if there is any way possible for the child to return home and set a plan on how family re-unification would work.

The centre even perhaps, if the child is an AIDS orphan, we can sometimes locate an auntie, grandmother, or cousin who is able to give the child a safe and happy home.  Our ultimate goal is always re-unification; as positive an environment as Msamaria can offer, it’s always preferable for a child to be in a family as opposed to an institution.  If we can rescue a homeless child from the streets and find a good placement for them with relatives, we consider it our greatest success.

« Education support

If re-unification with the child's family is impossible at the current time, the child returns to live at Msamaria and is enrolled in an individualized educational program.  There are two branches to Msamaria's Education Program.

The first is Non-Formal Education, where the child learns basic reading and writing, math’s and English on-site, at Msamaria.  This is most often for older children who never had the chance to go to school.  Because there’s no free public education in Tanzania, children who come from family situations so desperate that they had to run to the streets for survival have rarely had the chance to go to school.

The second branch is Formal Education, where children are mainstreamed into local schools along with neighborhoods children.

 Our learning approach :

  • Based on innovations results, including multi-grading teaching detailed teacher’s guide.
  • The teachers becomes more of a facilitator and students more independent learner.
  • Using easy-to-follow lesson guides prepared to give children active role in learning
  • Learning is dynamic rather than by rote and involves play and practical applications and nature.
  • Use teaches useful skills to  attract and retain children
  • Teaches  general life skills and about their own rights
  • Adopt children’s circumstances, the annual and daily timetable can be adjusted accordingly nature of teaching environmental, simplified curriculum and logical produced learning materials.

  • Teaching methods must give away to child-centred approach, children must enjoy education if it is to have a powerfully effects.
  • Kids have more voice regarding their education. They monitor their own attendance and can communicate problems and concerns through open dialogue.
  •  and if not suggestions boxes in the centre.
  • The atmosphere also encourages learning. More than just collection in classrooms

« Health care

Msamaria also has a full-time matron with nursing background who takes care of the children's health needs.  Most children arriving at Msamaria are malnourished, some severely so (the medical term for this is “kwashiorkor”), and it's our job to literally nurse them back to health - with the assistance of eggs, milk, and a special protein porridge.  The matron also teaches weekly health classes on relevant topics such as HIV/AIDS, hygiene, cleanliness, etc.

« Watoto Rafiki

Children are also involved in what we call our Rafiki (“friendly”) program.  This means that each child is in a “friend group” with two or three other children, led by a staff member.  Staffs meets with their member in groups every weekend’s morning and discuss a pre-arranged topic, such as the importance of honesty, working hard in school, or helping people around you.  Such basic ethics are usually just absorbed in children by parents, but we are being intentional to teach them as the children are separated from their parents, if indeed they are even alive.  The staffs also meet with each child in their "friend group" on a regular basis.  They will sit down with them individually and say, "How are you?  What are you thinking about these days?"  The Rafiki Program is our attempt to make sure that every child has individualized love and a parental figure in their life, and that no one falls through the cracks.
Watoto Rafiki group responsibility
